The I-70 Sign Show Presents "Spiral Jetty"

Visual artist and MU professor Anne Thompson will give a talk and discuss her yearlong "I-70 Sign Show" curatorial project, which inserts work by contemporary artists in rotation on a mid-Missouri billboard near Columbia. The discussion will be followed by a screening of the rarely seen film "Spiral Jetty". The 32-minute film (1970) documents the construction of and ideas behind artist Robert Smithson's iconic "Spiral Jetty" earthwork sculpture, located on the northeastern shore of the Great Salt Lake. The "I-70 Sign Show," which launched April 7 with artist Kay Rosen, embraces the Missouri highway landscape as a potent display opportunity, capitalizing on the state's signage surplus and engaging the provocative mix of ad messages along the interstate. The project is made possible by financial support from Mizzou, with additional support from DDI Media. Free!
