Yoav, a young Israeli man, absconds to Paris to flee his nationality, aided by his trusty Franco-Israeli dictionary. Desperate to erase his origins, he sees becoming French as his only hope for salvation. In Paris, things do not exactly get off to a good start but Yoav will not be dissuaded that easily. Yoav's attempts to find himself awaken past demons and open up an existential abyss in this tragicomic puzzle that wisely knows how to keep its secrets. Based on the real life experiences of writer-director Nadav Lapid (The Kindergarten Teacher, Policeman), Synonyms explores the challenges of putting down roots in a new place.

"Mercier projects a feral intensity, a boundless energy that's frightening in its freedom, something that possibly comes from a young artist who doesn't recognize the conventional codes of movie acting, or any kind of acting." (Robert Koehler, Cinema Scope)
"Astonishing, maddening, brilliant, hilarious, obstinate, and altogether unmissable." (David Ehrlich, IndieWire)
